Axial instability of a free-surface front in a partially filled horizontal rotating cylinder

چکیده
We investigate the axial instability of the free-surface front of a viscous fluid in a horizontal cylinder rotating about its longitudinal axis. A simplified model equation for the evolution of the free surface is derived and includes the effects of gravity, capillarity, inertia, and viscosity. This equation is solved numerically to determine the base state with no axial variation, and a numerical linear stability analysis is carried out to examine the onset of unstable axial modes. Various computational results are presented for the wavelength of the axial instability. Inertia is found to play an important role in the onset of the instability and the wavelength of the instability l satisfies the power law l;g, where g is surface tension. Finally some numerical simulations of the simplified evolution equation are presented to show that they can capture the steady shark-teeth patterns observed in recent experiments @R. E. Experimental study of coating flows in a partially-filled horizontally rotating cylinder
We describe a number of different phenomena seen in the free-surface flow inside a partially filled circular cylinder which is rotated about its horizontal axis of symmetry. At low angular velocities the flow settles into a steady two-dimensional flow with a front where the coating film coalesces with the pool at the bottom of the cylinder. This mode becomes unstable at higher angular velocitie...

– A novel pattern forming instability in a mixture of a granular material and water in a horizontal rotating drum is experimentally investigated. The particles accumulate in radial symmetric rings separated by pure water. The transition between the homogeneous state and the structured state is hysteretic. The transition point is extrapolated from the growth rates of the chain of rings. The traj...

In this paper natural convection heat transfer within a two-dimensional, horizontal, concentric cam shape cylinders that is partially filled with a fluid saturated porous medium has been investigated. both cylinder are kept at constant and uniform temperatures with the outer cylinder being subjected relatively lower than the inner one. In addition the forchheimer and brinkman effect are taken i...
متن کاملOn the natural convective heat transfer from a cold horizontal cylinder over an adiabatic surface
A steady two-dimensional laminar free convection heat transfer from a cold horizontal isothermal cylinder located above an adiabatic floor is studied both experimentally and numerically. In the experimental measurements the effects of cylinder distance from horizontal floor to its diameter (L/D) on heat transfer coefficient is studied for Rayleigh numbers of 3×105 and 6×105. Computations are ma...
متن کاملPolygons on a rotating fluid surface.
We report a novel and spectacular instability of a fluid surface in a rotating system. In a flow driven by rotating the bottom plate of a partially filled, stationary cylindrical container, the shape of the free surface can spontaneously break the axial symmetry and assume the form of a polygon rotating rigidly with a speed different from that of the plate. With water, we have observed polygons...
